They could have handled this area with a bit more subtlety and grace instead of it being so in-your-face. Mental illness is really difficult to pull off. Very few actors can do it well. So far, at least in this mental illness regard, I found Claire Dane's acting to be average. It was fine - but there was room for improvement. JMO.

I'm with you on her acting in it as well (weakest part of the series). I just don't find her 'act' believable and like you said, she just comes off as being forced.
My wife on the other hand, thought she was great...so ya...opinions

There are so many types of mental illness that it comes down to how one person perceives what a mentally ill person should act like.

The West Wing: S2 ~ 5/5
Long hiatus from viewing this one (only had 2 episodes to finish the season), but its still one of the best shows ever made IMO. Can't compete with the cast or writing. Some of the best pacing in any TV show, EVER

Black Sails S2 - 10/10
S1 of Black Sails while full of character development was admittedly a bit slow. Well all that pays off in S2 as the action/adventure is cranked all the way up and the characters begin to really shine. Amazing production value and some great writing puts this series at the top of what television has to offer right now.
