Thank you! I actually laughed so hard at these posts that I cried! I needed a good laugh, in the middle of rehabbing a knee from ACL replacement surgery.

You guys are awesome. Thanks....

Charles, when taking a portrait like this one...what kind of lens do you use? Also, how far do you position yourself from the model and how far do you separate the model from the background in order to keep her completely in focus and blur the background?

My 70-200 F2.8L is a great portrait lens, but I have not practiced portraits much and I'm unsure of positioning and a good F stop to use.

Any input is appreciated. Settings, exp, F stop....etc.

Did you take this pic in a studio (looks like it from the catch lights in her eyes)? Multiple lights? Reflectors? Soft box? The lighting is great. Nice shot.

Yes, it was taken in a studio, with natural light and a white fill card.

It was taken with my $80 50mm 1.8, trade you for the $1200 70-200

Don't have the exif in front of me but, it's definitely something in the middle, probably f/4 or something around that. I want to have her features in focus.

The 70-200 2.8L is indeed a great portrait lens, and you should have no problem separating the subject from the background by opening it up-- or else have them move closer towards you and away from the BG.

I did just upgrade my telephoto to the 70-200 F4L-- can't wait to start taking portraits with that. It's utterly wowed me so far.
