Potentially bad news for Aussie collectors
Just reading the papers here, and some of Australia's big retailers such as David Jones are lobbying the Federal Government to close the import tax loophole for items under $1000. I posted this here, as it's Sideshows items that often push close to that limit for us. For those not familiar, we can import a statue tax free if it is under $1k in value. Retailers are up in arms about the loss of local business that this allows and they are taking action. There is no indication yet that the government are going to make a change but if the pressure keeps up, and they do 'close the loophole' our hobby may get a lot more expensive

I take it, based on retailers lobbying for it, that it isn't a $1,000 per ITEM loophole, but shipments as a whole under $1,000 are exempt?

It's actually both. If I bought 5 different statues that all came in one shipment and under $1K, that's fine. Or if I bought one statue under $1K that' also fine. If I bought five of the same statue, then I think I would have a problem, as customs would deem it to be a commercial purchase. Apparently, retailers like DJ's a loosing huge volumes of sales (mostly clothing) because people are buying the same brands cheaper online from the US & UK and as long as each shipment is under $1K, there's no tax
