For that much, is it colored or B+W? Is it just half or full body sketch?

simple fact is artists (and everyone else) charges what people are willing and able to spend.
On case in point is Joe Linsner. He often draws color Dawn pieces that he puts up on EBay. About a year ago I got 2 for $800 and $1200 respectively. In the last year the price via auction kept rising and rising and now the new ones he puts up go for $1800+

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have a hard time purchasing 1 piece for over $200. I seem to find some great artists who are doing pieces for cheaper. If I can save some money by only having it done in pencils - then so be it...

Cap by George Perez $100.00
Wonder Woman by Dave Hoover $100.00
Batman by John Hebert $100.00
Batman by Joe Staton $15.00 (Signed by Batman voice Kevin Conroy)
Somewhere at home I have a Cap Head Sketch by John Cassiday that I only paid $10.00 or $20.00 for.

I really dont like it when you go to an artists table at a con and none of the artwork is priced. Am i supposed to stand there as i flip through his stuff asking him every 5 seconds - How much is this one?

Artists price their art the way they want. I know that sounds like a silly/stupid answer, but it's the only one that's accurate. Popularity is a large part of what the market VALUE is, but not necessarily what the pricing structure is from the artist him/herself. Adam Hughes still sells his sketches (to my knowledge) for about $200 a pop even though they will often sell for $500-$1000 on ebay.
In terms of creating some ceiling for your pieces ($100 has been mentioned), that just doesn't make sense to me. If you only have $100 and you're just dying to get something at a show, then it makes sense. But to say that you're not going to get something from your favorite artist because you have a limit of $xxx and he charges $xxx plus $10 seems nuts. Collect what you like and what you can afford, the rest will work itself out.

I'm not an art collector so I don't go hunting down artists for commissions. I like Dave Finch & Ethan VanSciver but I'm not going to spend $500.00 on a one character no background drawing. If I hear an artist is charging what in my opinion is a reasonable price I'll check out his work and determine what character he would be better suited to do.
