If you look at movie scenes from Empire Strikes Back his suit was more plastic looking then knitted fabric. I'm guessing if your living on a snow planet you wouldn't want knitted fabric.

That's the only time the suit looks shiny like that. The suit may very well have had a plastic/nylon component to it but the point is it didn't ever look like a hazmat suit. Especially not on Hoth or any flight space scenes.

I think the sculpted fabric effect is quite good actually. Here are some photos I found that seem to be similar to the XM statue(for the jacket, anyway)

The last image isn't showing up for me but the other two show inconsistent suits and neither look was on film. I'm only interested in what the characters look like on film. Not inconsistent promotional material.

If you guys are happy with the statue more power to you. To me this just doesn't remind me of the look I saw on film.

EDIT: Ok, I've done some more research and I think I know where the inconsistencies are coming from. This is clearly ESB flight suit look and that suit is definitively more rubbery/plastic than ANH X-Wing suit. So at least this statue is more accurate than I initially gave it credit for. That said I don't recall that aspect of the suit standing out so much. Anyway, just a personal preference I guess. I think flight suit Luke and I think of X-Wing suit... not Snowspeeder suit.

I think this is embarrassing quality from XM Studios. We all know they're capable of doing so much more. Look at Boba Fett. Look at Vulture, Namor, etc. They can pull off some seriously badass stuff, but this is a joke.

yeah, I keep coming back to the pics and wanting to love it but it's just such an odd choice for XM to make with respect to their first Luke statue. Need a more iconic suit for Luke IMO
