Why do Saturday morning cartoons suck?
Cable, video games & the internet. There are just more forms of distraction for kids out there.

True. These cartoons were designed truly for all ages. Most cartoons these days are intended only for younger viewers, unfortunately.

Popeye has been watered down over the years to extinction.

He is not allowed to eat spinach and clobber anyone anymore.

I still remember seeing a Popeye cartoon (WW2 vintage) where he was pounding the snot out of a Japanese submarine, and every so often the sub's commander...a really charicaturistically drawn Asian guy...would pop out of the hatch and say, "So Solly!". This would have been when I was about 8 or so, back in the mid 70's.

hehehe

Can you even IMAGINE something like that getting on the air now? Sheesh

I think it was when they went from really detailed individual cell animation and re-used the same scenes. Super Friends and Space Ghost are good example of this. Also, they outsourced much of the animation to Japan in the early days (pre-manga and anime which is really nice now) and that's where quality went on the decline. I think I blame Hannah Barbera for this since they dominated Saturday morning cartoons (at least when I was a kid).

My favs are old Fleisher Popeye and Superman, original Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes. Also some Bakshi cartoons. IMO, the WB cartoons began to suffer in their style (probably in the 60's) with Foghorn LegHorn and RoadRunner.

I would love to b!tch about the dearth of good cartoons these days, but then I think about the recent JLU (not to mention The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy...a guilty pleasure), and bite my tongue.

There have been plenty of exceptions throughout the years, so rail away!
