During the 14th fight of Ippo Makunouchi, he faced off with the Japanese champion, the fearsome Eiji Date. This was to be a fight for the title after the two fighters sparred together at the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. Eiji was declared the winner by KO in the 5th round of the fight, inflicting the first defeat of Ippo's career.
