Does Giger's bio mechanics have the same impact though now? We've been seeing his work for thirty five years. The Space Jockey fused with his machinery was amazing at that time. But again thirty five years later?
Now I love his stuff, but is it too familiar to us now?
I'm not disturbed by it anymore.
There have been some equally disturbing efforts I think in different directions.
I think of The Thing 1982.
Giger mixed a lot of sex into his work. Sex and horror are buttons in our brains that film makers always go for because they get results when mixed.
There is no denying the Alien's head was about as phallic as it can get. The "rape" of Kane also jarred our pysche.
Giger also often depicted sharp teeth in his works, this also pushes a primative fear button in our brains from predators.
But are their other buttons to push so to speak?
And of course the economy of using the creature, we rarely saw things very long in ALIEN. Audiences today seem to have little patience for that.
But what you imagine is often far worse than what is on screen. I'd like to see that kind of method again.
