DC movies steeped in realism and edge

I figure this will very quickly come down to a DC vs Marvel opinion but I was kinda amused by Warner Brother CEO's comment about DC movies: "They’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies.”

I think "steeped" in realism is pushing it a little bit there when you are talking about a guy who can fly in a blue and red suit and what they call edgier, I call more depressing.

It screams to me "we take our movies a little too seriously"

Maybe they should re-think their "realism" approach and make their movies a bit more fun to watch

A friend and I were just discussing this very thing about the DC movies. "Dark and Gritty" isn't nearly as enjoyable as "Well written and well executed". That's not to say that a film can't be dark and gritty and well written and executed, but when someone takes themselves too seriously in life, or in the performing arts, it can get tiresome awfully fast.

it's ironic because I always used to feel Marvel was the company that was always trying too hard to be "dark, gritty and edgy" and DC were the more fun story tellers. sad they seem to have forgotten what their characters should be somewhere along the way

To be honest Marvel Studios success in execution painted WB into taking this approach by default IMHO. Green Lantern proved that WB cannot beat Marvel Studios at it's own game. They have embrace this dark and gritty stance now, and while not my first choice, it is safer for them and the diversity in storytelling approach will ultimately combat fatigue with the genre as a whole IMHO.

DC hasn't done anything yet so I don't see any substance behind their statement.
