I was previously unaware that China imposes certain restrictions on foreign films into its own market. This limits both the number of films it allows in and the length of time they stay in theaters. Avengers Endgame, despite making over $600M, was pulled on May 24 after only one month. Given how close Endgame will get to the Avatar record, had it played in China longer this alone might have been enough to have put it over.
Avengers: Endgame’ Finishes Theatrical Run in China Without Extension
On May 24, the theatrical run of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame is officially over with a total revenue of RMB 4.24 billion ($615 million) at the box office. This is the first time an Avengers film stays in Chinese theaters for only one month. Although one month is the length of a film’s theatrical window in China. Films that perform well and have the potential to attract a sizable audience after one month will get extensions. The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron stayed in Chinese theaters for two months, and Avengers: Infinity War played for three months in China.

While it doesn't look good, I still say there is a small chance.
Beating Avatar would have been the icing on the cake for Endgame, yet even without the worldwide number 1 spot it has been phenomenally successful.

God Avatar is the most overrated movie in history , I don't remember avatar having that mad fan frenzy that the MCU has, I even fell asleep during the movie because it was so boring . I can't wrap my head around how popular avatar is.

It'll be entirely self-serving -- Endgame beats Avatar so that Cameron will flog Avatar 2 extra hard. Disney will then flog the next Star Wars trilogy extra hard to induce Cameron into flogging the other Avatar sequels even harder.
They can count me out -- no more Star Wars or James Cameron movies ever again.
