It appears most modern artwork in general these days, unless it is something obviously spectacular, seems to go for less upon resale. Speaking for myself, unless I was selling a cover or vintage page, I typically had a hard time moving it, especially lately. It's to the point where I'm just about completely out of the commissions market. Commission pieces seem to be an almost certainty to lose money from day 1, no matter how nice they are. However, there are some instances where the investment remains somewhat sound on modern artwork. I bought an X-Men cover for 8k in 2017 and recently sold it for 10k, though this seems to be more the exception to the rule.
I realize some people will say "just buy what you like -- who cares about value". Well, while people are certainly free to that opinion, I do not subscribe to it. This isn't a sofa or kitchen appliance. I'm not really inclined to spend that kind of money if I do not think the return will be there.
