Sideshow Wolverine Comiquette

Well, since noone else has done one, I'll take a crack at it.

This has been one of the most popular and well recieved pieces to come out of Sideshow's Marvel line so far. As you'll see in my review, I can understand why.

Sculpt.

Where to begin? This is the first piece that I've bought sculpted by the great Ray Villafane. His reputation is well deserved. This is some of the finest work I've seen in a statue. The detailing is exacting and finish is second to none. Everything from the pose and anatomy down to the tiny folds in the seam of his pants and gloves shows a love for the craft like nothing else. There's tiny creases etched into his belt and beautiful vein work in his arms. There's things in this piece that you'll be discovering for months after you get it. As close to perfect as you can ask for.

Post more pics in underneath.

Paints.

The paints only serve to improve this piece thankfully. I'm a big fan of the yellow and blue suit and I was really happy with how the paints came out. The rendering of shadow or muscle was kept to a minimum on this which is a big plus in my book with only a slightly darker yellow/orange color added to accentuate the musculature.

The Shoulder pieces have a great metallic finish to them which looks fantastic and the apps overall are very clean. There's a light application of blue to the mask and underpants. The flash picks this up nicely, but to the naked eye, it's not all that visible.

The hair on his arms is the biggest iffy part. In some ways, I like the fact that Ray sculpted a hair texture into the piece, but I also wonder how it would've looked if the hair was simply painted on. Ultimately, I think Ray made the right choice and the paints do a nice job of making the hair seem more natural.

Conclusion.

This piece is incredible. Plain and simple. It looks beautiful up close and practically leaps of the shelf at a distance. If I had to pick one complaint, it would be the base. The base is beautiful in it's own right, but seems a bit out of scale with the figure and is too large in my opinion. It's very thick and has a big overall size to it. It's a minor complaint when you consider all theings that could go wrong with a statue and most people seem to care less, so maybe it's just me. Two sidenotes, the claws have been a source of frustration for owners, myself included. This CAN be fixed, but it would've been nice if SS had used a more durable and stronger material for the claws. Also the exclusive came with two heads. These are held in place by powerful magnets that do a very good job of keeping the head secure. There's been a report recently of the head falling off when the glue holding the magnet came undone and pop..the head came crashing down. Scary thought. I hope this is an isolated event, since I've not heard of anyone else reporting it.

I can't possibly recommend this piece highly enough. This statue represents everything a high quality statue should. It's big, powerful and maticulously crafted.

An easy 9 out of 10

Thanks for reading

Thanks guys. Means alot coming from you two.

I've really enjoyed reading the reviews and I wish more people would participate. They really can help people decide if they wanna make a go at a piece.

I like doing reviews, but it helps to know people are actually looking

Great review. I agree the base was a little too big. I went with the regular version, because I only wanted to display the statue with the mask on. After seeing your picture, I'm glad I didn't get the exclusive, because the neck seam is very noticeable from the side and it seems like the color is more yellow on the head than on the costume. Here's a picture of the regular version to see that the seam is sculpted in to make it look like a masked costume and there isn't a difference in color on the head like you see on the exclusive.

Regular:

Yeah, I can see what carillj is saying. The paint apps make the change o' head more noticeable. I think the flash on my camera brings out the color difference more than it looks in person. I do think the regular does have a smoother transition though. Still with the exclusive, you get the Logan head which is really well done and the seam is not an issue at all with that head.

Bats is right though. the seam is virtually invisible to the naked eye...In person that is.
