If you're in Tokyo you can get by with a few Japanese phrases, as most of the larger hotels and shops and restaurants speak a little English.

i got back a few weeks ago. honestly we stayed in fairly big hotels. and went to various resturants and had nothing but difficulty's getting people who spoke english.
