How much does FedEx typically charge for duty? The last statue I received from DHL which was Rogue was $190 for duty! Which is crazy!

I have a prime 1 order from sideshow that can only ship by DHL due to size; how much more can I expect in taxes? I have shipping set to FedEx as an account preference but they said FedEx is not possible with this statue.

Customs murdered me on sideshow framed art print. It was $260 USD + FedEx shipping. Customs converted $260 USD to $340 CAD.

$340 CAD x 20% duties = $68 CAD Duties

$340 + $68 = $408 CAD (they add duties to value before taxing)

$408 CAD x 13% GST = $53 CAD GST

I paid $121 in duties and taxes for a $340 framed art print. 35% basically in duties/taxes.

Wow! That is some hefty duties/taxes. That really sucks.

Most cargo companies charge almost %70 percent of a statue for shipping fee to Europe and Middle East . That is insane...

Why is duty so much? At first I thought it included your taxes but you listed your GST separately.

So I called CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) to investigate. They said something doesn't seem right, it shouldn't be 20% but that these codes change all the time. It seems like FedEx completes the customs entry on our behalf and puts the wrong code. Intentional or not, they are screwing us over. I am going to try and request a re-assessment. So much headache.

I would ask for a re-assessment indeed. I don't remember exactly the numbers, but I was charged quite a lot for duty + taxes on a recent statue I got from Sideshow and I requested DHL to recalculate it. In 2 or 3 days I got an update from them. If I remember it correctly the corrected numbers were around 30 CAD less, what's great considering I got a 400 USD statue.

TL;DR: DHL used the wrong code on the product so it was classified as a toy instead of a statue. The recalculated duty + taxes were much more reasonable.

Thank you for sharing that info. Was the re-assessment done at DHL or request from government?
