Grendelscott's DVD Corner: 01/08/05

Welcome back! Just to recap for any new members, each week I will post what is due out that week (or at least most of the main stream releases, as anywhere from 100-300 DVDs are released each week). I'll then spotlight a DVD with a review or news about a new one coming out. Finally, I'll post a DVD easter egg or two each week. Many of you might already know of them, but they are fun things to find "hidden" on your DVDs.

DVD releases due out Tuesday, Jan 10th:

TV Seasons/Box Sets:
  • Dora the Explorer: Save the Day (Box Cover)
  • The Flash: The Complete Series (Box Cover)
  • Sam Peckinpah's Legendary Westerns Collection (Box Cover)
  • Strong Medicine: The Complete First Season (Box Cover)

I am most looking forward to the rerelease of The Magnificent Seven. It is already out on DVD, but from what I understand, this is a new digitally remastered print.

IMO this is the best Western ever done.

Well, there is already a "Damn you, Grendel." Let me add a "You just made my day Grendel." I had NO IDEA that "Cabin in the Sky" was coming out on DVD. This is one of those movies I have been waiting for for a LONG time. For those of you who don't know (I would say 99% of the members here and 90% at the Hudlin Forum) "Cabin in the Sky" was one of the first movies to be made with an all black cast that wasn't a "Step -n- Fetch it" type movie. "Step -n- Fetch it" was an actual character that was featured in films and he was the stereo typical ignorant black character in early hollywood along the lines of the incredibly offensive "Amos and Andy". Anyway, this movie featured immortals like Lena Horne, Ethal Waters, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson and Butterfly McQueen. It is a story with a religous theme to it, but it is very entertaining and a joy to watch and a "Cage" family favorite.

Along with the Magnificent Seven I am excited to run to the store tomorrow.

I agree Madjazz, I also have this on dvd, but I'd like to get this edition. I didn't expect them to make one of it, but I'll get it anyways and leave the old one for my old man. I have to say Once Upon a Time in the West, or TGTBaTU. But this is one of my all times faves. Best adaptation of the Seven Samurai.

Does anyone know, of those that have gone shopping already, if they released Transporter 2 with part one like in the same pack? I'd rather get that then both separately.

I'm giving away my original Magnificent Seven as well. Spread the joy. The first one came out in May 2001 if anyone is keeping track.

I did not notice a twin pack for Transporter in Best Buy but it does not mean it does not exist.
