We're in the last decade now, 2010-2022, &, besides Afterlife w/ Archie & Chilling Tales of Sabrina, there's not a whole lot going on with solid horror comics. DC keeps swinging & missing, as they make attemps w/ their new & supposedly improved horror line. Marvel's given up, rolling characters like Blade & Dracula into their super-hero lines. & the old, reliable, experimental indie publishers of old have, mostly, folded up shop.

Than .... along in 2010 a guy named Jason Paulos over at Blackhouse then Asylum Press, gets the great idea to pay homage to the great B&W horror mags of the past & starts writing & drawing a book called EEEK!. I scopped a couple of issues & loved them. Anthology horror was attempting ga return. -

Four years later, Editor Rich Sala, creates his own homage publishing company Warrant, and begins printing a b&w, magazine-style comic named The Creeps, which runs for a solid 32 issues before being legally forced to name-change, now calling itself Shudder.

Rich hires some of the best talent in the business & is very successful recreating the mood & tone of Creepy, Eyrie, & Vampirella. Rich is a great guy who honestly loves the horror books of old -

Just last year in 2021, Rich Sala follows up Creeps with the Vampiress Carmilla. Like her Warren predecessor, Vampirella, Carmilla will often make an appearance in the book with her own tale of guest spot.

In 2020, through Kickstarter, writer & artist Mike Hoffman launches Eyrie, another anthology horror mag in the tradition of 60's & 70's predecessors. I met Mike at Baltimore's Comic Con a few years ago & found him to be completely passionate about his book. It shows. Mikes a great artist & a real throwback artist, down to the 70's fashions his characters wear.

Well, I hope you had fun. Like I mentioned earlier, I've only been able to show a drop-in-the-bucket of the artists & art that have contributed to the genre' of Horror & Halloween comics. There is so much more. Pre-code horror comics were some of the best aver published, with stories that, to this very day, still leave me cringing, laughing, gasping, & in shock that writers & artists had the nerve to pull that off. Try & find trade copies of any early horror comics, you'll have a ball.

Happy Halloween!

You know I’ll be there. The horror section in my office is slowly but surely growing.
