Quick tip #2 on where to find trades of 1950's horror -

By far, my favorite 50's horror trades have to be the IDW' The Chilling Archives Of Horror. Originally available for under $25 a copy, these collections have gone up in price & are getting more & more difficult to find. But ... well worth the hunt. You can still find them in comic shops & bookstores, Amazon & ebay. Mostly harback, although there are a few softcovers, Chilling archives also publishes a reprint horror comic on occasion. They're usually broken down by Artist or Theme. If you see one, grab it!

There are around 20 of these.

Ross Andru - Before drawing some of the best Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Kull & Flash stories ever in the Silver & Bronze ages, Ross Andru, sometimes with partner Mike Esposito, drew some outstanding pre code Horror work for comics. I love his covers, so I'll showcase some here -

Would you believe that after their seminal work on Golden Age books like Captain America & The Black Owl, Joe Simon & Jack Kirby teamed up on pre code horror comics? Featured mostly in Black Magic comics, Kirby & Simon created some pretty darned special horror -

If you like what you see here, check out the book Simon & Kirby Horror.
Still available on Amazon.

George Evans drew alotta pre code horror, both for the great EC comics house & for several of the pre, & competing smaller books. He had a crisp, realistic style that only leaned towards the fantastic when he drew his ghost & ghouls. -

Robert Hayward Webb - (also known as Bob Webb) Drew during the 40's & 50's. He drew some super hero comics during the Golden Age, like Blue Beetle & Sheena, but really excelled with his horror work.

So romantic -

Going to start mopping up with the 1950's, pre code, horror comic book artists with a group of talent that illustrated the most well known & most respected publ. house of the macabre. EC comics published 3 enormously popular horror books back in the day; Vault of Horror, Tales From The Crypt & The Haunt of Fear. All 3 titles promised & delivered in both art & story with many of the tales revisited to this day in film. Starting around 1950, with horror books, Entertaining Comics (ec), created the type of comics that would strongly cause the comic book backlash in the mad 50's. This backlash resulted in the Comics Code Authority which basically hamstrung the industry, especially in terms of horror. EC bowed out in Sept. 1954, continuing on with Mad Magazine & a few non-horror, quick-to-sink books.

In my opinion ... There was no one better than ec comics for horror. No one has touched them since.

Jack Davis - You might recognize his style from his numerous Mad Magazine works, Jack was just a master.

Quick Tip # 3.

Still sticking with the trades collecting pre code horror.

PS Artbooks, back in 2010 on, published a series of hdbk collections called Harvey Horrors. Each beautiful book contains 6-8 complete comics. Titles like Witches Tales, Chamber Of Chills, Tomb Of Terror, & Black Cat Mystery were presented. You can still find a few of these on Amazon anywhere between $24 to $50 dollars. Sofar, I've only been able to collect all volumes of Witches Tales & Tomb Of Terror. Great books. Look for them.

Graham Ingels - Most associated with ec's The Haunt Of Fear, Ingels' art took me a bit to warm up to hen 1st encountered. It seemed muddy to me. But ... as time went by, & I was exposed to more & more of his work, I finally got it. It wasn't muddy ... it was atmospheric, & downright unnerving.

Tip #4

Besides the now extremely expensive, slip-cased collections of the ec titles, Russ Cochran Publ. reprinted much more affordable softback versions of the horror trio. Even though it's been a while, I still see these soft-copies in comic stores & conventions at very affordable prices. Just look & you will find affordable reprints of ec horror. Darkhorse & Gemstone also published reprints.
