What "circumstances" is he referring to? Is there bad history with Jim and McFarlane?

I think he was probably just referring to the fact that his GF asked him to do a sketch in a book that he had not worked on.

I hope it all goes well and doesn't happen like last year in Barcelona. Some folks waited for 14 hours and that day he just signed and did no sketches, lol.
Then the following day he recognized the people and ended up doing sketches to a couple of them, so not all was lost for them.
