Totally agree.
Definitely in movies, though.. government officials deciding to sit down with an alien (over a few cups of Joe and some donuts, of course) to discuss how their culture differs from our own from the get-go, well.. that would negate the need for exploding buses, chases through urban backyards, sex scenes between agents on their down-time... bah. Not for me.
"Starman" is still one of my favorite sci-fi movies.
