Gotta go with Die Hard, just slightly. Mel Gibson was great in the first LW but the first ones downplayed how close to the edge he was.

As a series I have to go with Lethal Weapon just barely because I enjoyed all 4 films. Die Hard With a Vengence sucked, bad.
The original Die Hard is by far my favorite individual film of all 8 though.

LW: Loved it!
LW2: Good
LW3: Not so good
LW4: Good
DH: Loved it!
DH2: Sucked
DH3: Not so good
DH4: Hated it!

I very much liked both franchises, including number 4 from each, although DH4 tipped LW 4, i think DH 3 was very average evening them out overall.....
