When Did you Feel Betrayed by Comics?

Risingstar and I were talking in another thread, and brought up this question. When did comics really pi$$ you off?

For me there were three points at which I really thought of quitting, and for those same reasons I think I'm finally (probably, with some exceptions) done with monthlies: The Clone Saga, Age of Apocalypse, and Heroes Reborn.

1) The Clone Saga was just a mess in general. It cynically messed with a ton of recent stories (we hadn't been reading the real Peter Parker since the mid-70s!), but even that could have been pulled off--maybe--if they'd just done it. Instead, they danced around it for years (!), and finally just let it all go to hell. Everything was such a mess that we all just accepted the fact that they'd messed up completely, and let it go. We essentially agreed that it was all crap, and just wanted to start enjoying Spidey again, so we just ignored it. And then One More Day came about, and sort of codified that. Which was both good and bad. But mostly bad. It was story bowing down completely to business and marketing.

2) Age of Apocalypse was an okay story--what there was of it--but it was definitely the first time that I really thought "wow, they're milking this sh!t for all its worth and then some." Of the three on this list, I fault it the least--but it was the first time I found myself buying books I didn't really want, just because it was event-driven. I'd done this a little, back when Marvel did the linked-annuals experiment, but I didn't mind it so much then...in fact, I liked "visiting" books I didn't usually buy. This was just egregious.

3) Finally, Onslaught and Heroes Reborn. Not only a stupid event (Onslaught is Professor X combined with Magneto and huge spikey shoulder pads? What?), but one that also essentially killed the entire Marvel Universe. None of that sh!t made sense, and it culminated with a resetting of all the major books (minus Spidey, somehow) in the 616. It fuc%ed up everything, and the MU is still trying (sort of) to right itself. Oh, and it was a cynical exploitation of the fan base, to boot. Insult to injury: Marvel inexplicably handed some of its best books to Rob Liefeld to re-imagine. Holy absent feet, Batman!

Still, I stuck through it for the next decade or so, out of sheer inertia at times. There were high points along the way, but still.. tough era.

Haven't read these yet, but I have to say, I'm sort of avoiding it. The whole idea sort of rankles.

You need to jump around and give up on books you are not enjoying instead of ditching comics in general. Many good reads are out there over the last decade. Just listen to there's and read what is being heralded. Avoid the crossovers unless it really intrigues you.

I've heard this side of it too. Dan Slott is writing this, yeah? I've liked his stuff in the past. I think this is an idea that might have been awesome as a side-book, but as the flagship Spidey title, I'm not so sure.

Of course, I haven't read them at all, so I should probably just shut up.

Joe Q taking that helm of Marvel. Does that count? The guy has serious hatred for Spidey and PP in general. The character is now a joke and probably no longer the premier character in Marvel.

Yeah, I probably should. Most of the great reads I recall from the last decade were short runs. Astonishing X-Men, Bendis' Daredevil run (at least early on), Ultimate X-Men. I also loved the Conan reboot, Invincible, Walking Dead, and other smaller books.

Which doesn't bode well for the mainstream books, since of the ones I list off the top of my head, only Daredevil was a mainstream monthly.

I don't like Secret Invasion because it was fake Spider-Woman. But I love Superior Spiderman, probably because Spidey is not a favorite of mine. Other then the original Ultimate Spidey, I never bought Spidey and now I do. So if they are screwing with your favorite character maybe it stings to much to enjoy.

I felt screwed over when they went above $3 and I've only bought trades for the last 5 years. With the Amazon discount a lot of the books are under $2 per issue.
