I read once on a book they used yellow olive oil, but sure could get messy, they recommend to use food grade coloring, my wife gave me a Betty Croquet food color kit, has red, blue, green and yellow. It's about 4 dlls and works great on simple water. Hope this helps you and you definitely want to fill them.

The way I displayed the upper case is with a metallic chopstick between the two pieces, putted on the middle so it looks leveled.

Thank you! Yeah I?ll probably stick with water with food coloring just in case they spill. Probably the safest bet.
