I think it also highlights what creators can handle criticism and which ones can't. The free speech/fair use implications in this situation could have been disastrous had Queen forged ahead with suing Escher Girls. Copyright law gets abused quite a lot as it is, especially with the DMCA (look at all the fradulent Youtube takedowns). A victory in Queen's favor could have put all fan-based or critical sites/blogs at risk of being sued or harassed into oblivion by creators with an axe to grind.
That people like Queen and Zircher (who, oddly, didn't start screaming bloody murder at Escher Girls or Queen's detractors until after Queen backed down) think fair use and free speech should be sacrificed lest the artist's ego be bruised speaks volumes about the kind of people they are. Nobody in any field of work, creative or otherwise, is immune to criticism and critique. To think otherwise is pure stupidity.
