There's way too many people that don't appreciate they're in a very heavy vehicle moving way faster than anything else surrounding it (except other vehicles of course).

Yeah, people don't realize it takes less than a second for trouble to happen when you are driving. Even at slow speeds. Plus, people tend to zone out when doing other things while driving which is when the accidents (if you can call them that) happen.

depends on the state. a lot of things are "illegal" and most people dont even know about them. I suspect since its so common not even cops would bother unless the driver was doing something blatantly stupid as a result.

In NH is been illegal to do things like eat behind the wheel and use your phone while driving for almost a decade. Some states that still allow phones require hands free talking by law.

But like i said its so common to see some idiot that pressed autopilot because their mind is entirely on the conversation that it will take a real effort from local authorities to put a stop to it. If they started to hand out $500 fines it would help after a few years.
