Hey Computer Geeks. Ever heard of a "Hard Reset"?

I’ve had this new laptop since Oct. ’09 and in the past month or so, I’ve had two occurrences of it not powering up at all. Hit the On button and nothing happens.

Sure, I’ve had ‘em freeze occasionally and have to remove the battery and restart it, but never this.

Anyway, I went to t forum and it seems like a common problem among HPs and Compaq PC’s.

Here’s how they say to resolve it:

Quote:
Sometimes it is necessary to do a hard reset to erase all of the information in the temporary memory and regain functionality of your PC when it stops responding. For example, doing a hard reset is helpful if your keyboard quits responding, you cannot get your PC to come out of hibernation or sleep mode, or if a software program causes the PC to freeze.

The hard reset will not delete saved files on the hard drive.

To perform a hard reset, follow the steps below.

1-Unplug the AC adapter from the notebook PC and remove from any port replicator or docking station.
2-Remove the battery from the notebook battery compartment.
3-Press and hold down the power button for about 20 seconds.
NOTE: Holding down the power button while the computer is turned off drains any residual charge in the capacitors.
4-Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook PC.
5-Press the power button to turn the notebook PC back on.

Ever heard of anything like this?

Dell once told me to do it on my laptop and my cable company tells me to do it when my DVR acts up. Works all the time.

Only thing i need to do for macs is reset the pram from time to time for regular maintenance.

Other then i do is drain the battery completely once a month then do a full charge, this helps keep the battery to last longer. Other then that not sure why it would do that.

OK, then. Some of you guys have had to do similar things. Guess it's not too unusual.

Maybe I have to do it because I never run on battery power (always plugged in) and I never let it discharge completely from time to time.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Ya i just remembered they call it cycling the battery. If ya never run it down completely, you dont use the cells up in part of the battery and they burn out. Something along that lines. So by you keep using the cells, it will last a lot longer.
