And yeah, I doubt my wife will ever ask me to sell all the art I've collected in the last couple of years. But hell, if she did? I might sell all but a couple. Real estate is usually a better investment, right?
I don't know if either is really an investment.

Art surely shouldn't be. Call it a gamble and I will agree.

Buying a house? Unless you plan to buy low and flip, or pay in cash, the amount you actually pay over the life of the loan will total more than you make on equity.

I never consider art an investment - keep it as a hobby so I can continue to enjoy it.

A house is a necessity and the value is not always measured tangibly.

Good luck on the collection and the new digs. I am right there with you on the house - hoping to break ground in the next week or so.

I'd rather pay a mortgage than rent and pay someone else's.

but year art is a crazy way to invest. Just buy what you love and hold onto it.

Maybe I misrepresented myself with my previous statement. Art collecting is and will always be a hobby for me, with the sole purpose to own and enjoy the pieces that i've acquired.

I agree, it's not an investment. And while I do have zero self control, one of the questions I always ask myself before making a purchase is, will this retain value? If push came to shove, will I be able to break even if I ever had to sell?

You too, man! We just barely started the process of figuring out our needs in the next house and what are budget will be, so I'm prepared for the roller coaster.

For sure! Owning let's you build equity to offset some of the interest you pay. I haven't rented sense I was single.

Asking if something will retain value makes sense but it is a slippery slope toward uses resale possibility is a slippery slope into ROI/investment thinking. I look at enjoyment is the first and primary factor with other decision criteria falling below.
