New Display Cabinet thoughts
Hey Gang!
I'm currently remodeling a new home and I'm able to completely redo the basement to showcase my statue collection. I have a basic design in mind: lower cabinets (34" tall) to be open bookshelves for my graphic novels and trades, with open shelving (about 5' tall) for display of statues.
My question is: What colors and style do you think work best for the cabinet and shelving to display the statues?
I collect mostly Bowen, with some Sideshow and custom commission pieces.
Thank you for your time.

That's a tough one. If you have good lighting in your cabinet, I think black looks best because it draws attention to the illuminated characters without being distracted by the background.
If you don't have lighting within each individual display case, a white background makes the statues a bit more visible.
I also think a natural maple or wood background looks good as well.
Here are a few samples I have in my photo collection that I'm using to help me decide how I'm going to display my pieces, eventually.

Hey Gary, thanks for your advice.
My last set up was wood stained shelving, much like the 3rd picture. I was contemplating black, or a dark/med gray this time. But I'm worried the darker pieces won't stand out as much.
I'll probably have lighting in the cabinet.

They really is a tough question, I personally prefer the look of the black cabinets, but as Gary said they drink a lot of the light up, I've found myself adding an extra light to a few of my cubes to combat this. The white shows up better naturally. All of them look good, it just seems to come down to personal preference and lighting.
Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Does anyone have experience of a matte vs a gloss background material?

Gary Tonge's made some good suggestions. I don't have my display set up yet, so I can't speak from first-hand experience, but I might also suggest the mirrored backing option for 1:4 and larger pieces. I wouldn't use it on smaller pieces as it probably tends to really make it look "busy".
