Primers and Sealers

I didn't see any useful threads regarding primers and sealers so I figured I'd create one.

So what do the paint masters use? What do you guys think are the best primers and sealers to use? What are the different types and when do you use them?

Any primer will work, just depends on which one you like.

I use Duplicolor most of the time.

Here is some videos i did on them

As for sealers it depends also.

I use testors Dull Cote to seal all my skins.

But if i want glossy look i use Pledge floor polish, can get it at most super markets in the cleaning sections.

Testors also has a gloss cote as well, good stuff.

Garage Kit Colors has a bunch of sealers and primers as well to push thru a airbrush. I love their flat cote, it can dull shiny paints amazing and well worth it.

With the future floor polish, do you put it straight in the airbrush?

yup right thru the airbrush.

just that if your using a fine airbrush it won't work well cause your trying to gloss coat it and it will come out misty

need a thicker nozzle airbrush to get a nice thick coat.

i like to blow dry the area first just to get it semi warm and then if i spray future thick i can then stop spraying and blow dry it down then rinse repeat till i get a nice gloss coat

I had something weird happen over the weekend with the duplicolor filler gray primer. I haven't had problems before, but I literally have no idea what happened. Piece was clean, humidity wasn't bad, can was shaken. I sprayed several coats a few days ago and it was dry. I was gone all of saturday, and when I went to sand the piece sunday, it had all these strange wet, tacky spots. It didnt seem like the primer was applied unevenly, but I couldn't get these spots to dry with a hair dryer. I basically had to sand/wipe it off and expose the raw surface again. I've never seen anything like this.... any thoughts?

sounds like resin wasn't cured

what item are you priming?

if its a garage kit, then i expect the resin wasn't cured and is leaking. Which primer will not help.

if its a pre painted statue that you took off the paint and then went to prime i would need to know how you did it.

Anytime you prime resin and leaks happen, 9 times out of 10 its the resin causing issues.

yeah that would make sense maybe. It's a pair of wings I sculpted. I was at the end of my resin supply, and my Part A was a little funky. It seemed cured though. I thought maybe it was the glazing compound I used, but it wasn't the patched areas that were wet, it was just random.

I've been trying to learn to paint my own statues, that's why I'm always at painter's pit stop.

so you sculpted the wings and then made a mold and casted it up in resin?

or are you painting on the sculpted item?
