I've felt that way for many years now.
The "hobby" is in the gutter if your main focus is wheeling and dealing to consistently turn over pieces in your collection to feed an insatiable, perpetual acquisition itch.
OTOH, if you are simply a fan of the art form, buy a statue occasionally as budget allows, have always been very selective and deliberative of most purchases, and tend to hold on to what you buy, then you are probably quite impressed at what is available these days.
Personally I wouldn't trade my regular 2017 Red Sonja for a Doom on his throne EX if you paid me on top of it.
For that matter, I can't think of one highly hyped "grail" over the years that I would trade for anything I bought in 2018- including the Tweeterhead Supoergirl. Everything overhyped since I've been in this hobby has been, or likely will be, done better.
When there isn't a lot of competition, mediocrity is ascendent.
