The criticism of Hollywood white washing these roles is a valid one.

Considering the main character is Japanese, they should have cast an actor with some Japanese ancestry at least.

I'm guessing they will rename her character as a result?

This decision was purely motivated by money. I can understand why they did it though, they will make more money by casting an american actress. I don't like it, but I understand it. I know there was a petition to cast Rinko Kikuchi, who is great. That's who I would have cast, but she's not a "name" like ScarJo. Like the guy said in the article, if you want a japanese actress then a japanese studio needed to make this.

This is my problem with the studios and their faux diversity. Here is a perfect opportunity to bring diversity to the genre world, but instead they whitewash it for fear of risking box office. Diversity will only play a part when it will help box office or at least not interfere with it.

Unfortunately this IS all about dollars at the box office. If you want this film to get made, then this is the precedent set by mostly white, male CEO's of all major studios.

When you look at the demographics, Asian actors are cast in very few Hollywood films unless it involves samurai, ninjas or GI Joe.

I do think ScarJo is a talented actress who doesn't deserve any blame here. At the same time, she obviously thought she was worthy of playing the role.

Only a few seconds of video being show, so it´s hard to judge, but I like what I´m seeing and the atmosphere. Scarlett is definitely becoming the Hollywood face of sci-fi!
