OJ Simpson held over ‘bid to fix trial defence’
OJ SIMPSON, the former American football star who was controversially acquitted of killing his former wife, was back behind bars yesterday after being accused of using a false name to contact a witness in his forthcoming robbery and kidnap case.
Las Vegas court officials claim he posed as a man called Miguel to telephone another defendant and leave a message on his answer machine in order to get their stories straight before their trial, which is due to be held in Las Vegas in April.
Simpson was picked up at his mansion in Florida on Friday by bounty hunters from the You Ring We Spring bail agency, which paid his £64,000 bail when he first faced the charges last September.
While attending a wedding in Las Vegas he is alleged to have led a posse of friends into a hotel room and robbed two sports memorabilia dealers. He claimed he was attempting to reclaim items that belonged to him. He faces 12 charges that could put him behind bars for 20 years.
A court spokesman said yesterday that Simpson had tried to evade restrictions on communicating with codefendants. A judge will rule on Wednesday whether he broke his bail conditions.
