I think the effort would’ve been much better spent creating solid spin offs films like TV has The Mandalorian; personal stories or exploration of specific themes rather than forcing a direct sequel trilogy. SW has a lot of Universe to explore for them to do the less than great job that they did.

The easiest thing to do would have been to introduce a new threat. I remember watching ST:TNG and Klingons and Romulans felt sort of done, but when they introduced the Borg it was terrifying and different. Then later shows like Voyager used the Borg so much they became tired.
Star Wars has a whole galaxy to play with, they could have had a new distinct threat like the Yuuzhan Vong of the EU or something else.
