I'd suggest not to use 100% sculpey firm.
Especially for a beginner, sculpey firm as the name suggests is a lot firmer than super sculpey and much harder to work with.
Most sculptors mix super sculpey and sculpey firm together 50-50, it keeps the grey colour but is easy to work with.
The reason for mixing the 2 is the grey colour shows up all the imperfects, while super sculpey with its beige almost translucent colour hides them.
As to your question, I try and have at least 1cm (10mm) of clay over the armature and foil, you can have less of course but it's more Likely to crack when you bake it.
Having thinner parts and thicker parts when you bake shouldn't be a problem, you'll find the clay tends to go darker on the thinner parts sometimes.
Also you can always bake and then add to it again and bake it again.
