Comic Book Barbarians

Huge fan of what Dark Horse is doing with Conan. They're really telling Howard's stories with respect and all the bloody reverence they deserve. Now that I've read that Kull's coming, it's given me a chance to reflect on other Barbarians that have made the move to comics.
Marvel talcked Conan, Thongor and Kull. First gave up Elric and a few more of the Eternal Champions. Avatar's Wolfskin was tons of fun. Can anyone think of any comic-book sword and sorcery that's worth a look for?

Chaykin & Mignola's Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser tpb from Dark Horse. Great stuff, definitely not your typical sword and sorcery.

DC had some barbarian-type characters in the early '70s: Beowulf, Stalker, Claw the Unconquered. The writing on these was no great shakes, but I thought they were cool at the time. They also did Fafhrd & Grey Mouser (which was drawn by Chaykin that time around!).

If you really want a good story, check out Arak from DC. Or Warlord. They're not straight S&S, but enjoyable nonetheless. Why these haven't been collected yet, I don't know. Maybe a Showcase...

I remember liking Warlord when Grell was drawing it. Think I may even have 10 or so back issues...but this most recent run...not very good.

Will look for Arak.

I love the original F&GM series. Just awesome, and so true to the books. Highly recommended. (And didn't I read that they're coming out with these again, maybe in collected form?)

The novels, or the original '70s comics? The Mignola/Chaykin stories from the '80s were collected early this year.

I've never been terribly happy with tha way Elric of Melnebone has been done in comics. Wish a new company would tackle him.
Just love this pic.

Corum - who shares the same soul w/ Elric and other heroes by the same author - has also been represented in comics. First took a crack at him in the 80's. Would love to see this one-handed warrior back.

Great character, and the First Comics series featured some of Mike Mignola's earliest work.
