I'm also fairly certain that in ranked online matched the gear boosts are turned off. Which is really the only place where it would matter?

Even if I'm playing with friends offline, I don't see the point in learning match ups or which combos to optimize if the damage is gonna constantly be fluctuating. Guess I just don't see the appeal in getting hit with a 4 hit combo that's gonna do 50% damage. Not saying it's a bad idea, just definitely not for me.
I do wish that extra abilities were simply tied to a variant system like MKX, but seeing things like Aquaman's 25% chip damage special I think I'll pass

I finished story mode.
I have been playing as Poison Ivy and Black Canary the most.
Started Wonder Woman and Catwoman.

Not liking the new Wonder Woman, she lost SO many of her tools. I suppose they compensated by making her more of a powerhouse type character, but there is just so much stripped away from her last incarnation. Air dash is now linked to trait, no stance switch combos, lost most of her strings, etc.
