I'm very happy with the paint on all 3 Trek pieces in my display.

So compete it will and must.
I have nothing negative to say about the P1 piece, but I do think they screwed up on the edition size. I was on the waitlist for both versions at both Prime 1 and Sideshow for several months with no luck. I think availability on the secondary market will be more scarce as a result of that low ES, and the prices will be sky high.

I think the Darkside piece is a very worthwhile alternative. The masked portrait looks great. We need better images of the unmasked, preferably on the statue rather than beside it.

Yeah. I have all three Darkside Star Trek pieces. Even as pricey as they were, I obviously liked them enough to get all three. However whilst the newest of three (Kirk) is helped by a translucent resin headsculpt, the paint app while solid, is kind of dated imo. I’ve got primarily movie related pieces, and the skin paint app isn’t as refined as I would like. But from a short distance, as shown on photos, it’s more or less fine.

You know, it wouldn't take much effort, from a skilled painter, to bring this Darkside piece to the next level.....

There's a great basis for a serious project piece here.

Yes, but how many pieces do many of us have still in our collection, that have been surpassed by new versions being released every other year.

And many of us, continually make compromises because we choose not to pay above a certain personal threshold.

I try not to compromise. I will do without before I make do with consolation statues.

I mean this is a fine statue, all I am referring to is considering this statue as a substitute for the Prime 1 if that is what someone wants more.

Agreed, on some counts.

I will never sell my OG Sideshow Spider-Man PF as he was my gateway statue. But he is definitely down the list at this point as far as Spidey Statues go.

Let’s be honest here, all true collectors want the best of the best, but like with anything we collect there will always be something better that comes along.
How many of us thought the Tweeterhead Catwoman was the end all be all..then a year later we get this and the Prime 1. Doesn’t make the Tweeterhead version obsolete now does it? It’s definitely not #1 anymore though, but it sure does still look good.
So yeah you’re correct to say we don’t want second best, but it’s not like we are getting a knockoff of the Prime 1, we are just getting a different interpretation.
And to be fair, at least for me I was always leaning toward this one as I wanted the unmasked sculpt. I just was amazed how good the prime 1 came out, and definitely would try and grab that one, if I wasn’t getting this one.
