They're decorative, in part to break up the monotony of the solid black.

Hmm. On the one hand the buckles are a nice decorative element that provides nice contrast against the black and is complemented by the gold items in the bag of loot. On the other hand (or foot) I don't miss them when looking at the modified photo.
