Hacking of corporate information

I was thinking, regarding the Sony corporate hacking, if I receive an stolen item from someone and I know it was stolen yet proceed to use it am I not guilty of receiving stolen property and am now subject to heavy fines and even jail?

Why is it that the police/FBI aren't prosecuting the various websites that are publishing or allowing this stolen data to be displayed? I see it the same receiving stolen property.

They would if they could. I haven't followed the specifics of this case, but usually, the content resides on servers located in countries with lax prosecution by their own governments and without cooperating with the U.S.

An excellent point. And the news websites are profiting off of the information.

At minimum, the authorities and powers that be should be condemning this type of activity.
