All of his movies are like that. Darkly humorous looks at slices of life and/or the things he was exposed to growing up. Polyester, Hairspray, Cry Baby, Pecker...all are great dissertations on American culture.

I still love you. I just don't know what your criteria for a good movie or show is.
Its over the top, people act in absurd ways that nobody really does, the movie are just weird to me. Yes some of it was somewhat humorous, but mostly everything was over the top to an extreme degree.

but then again I like sports and most gay guys seem to hate that. I guess my inner straight guy has a big voice after all.

give me a good horror, sci fi, zombie, movie any day of the week

That's why Merl likes the movie so much, you have to be a drama queen to enjoy it.

I hardly think that I qualify as a drama queen. But, again, the problems you have with the movie are exactly what is remarkable about John Waters films.

Honestly, I don't know how you can say you enjoy slapstick and then knock things like Hairspray, which isn't -slapstick-, but still takes a long passage from the commedia del arte, which demands overblown caricatures instead of realistic people.

And while I enjoy good sci-fi and horror, there's no way you can tell me those people in those movies are any less riduculous than any John Water character.
