I’ll have to check mine. It’s been way long since I’ve read it. And, actually, since I’d read them in their original tabloid size installments, I may never have read this collected edition even though it sits on my shelf. I should take a look at it.

The Kirby Fourth World omnibus is huge, even for an omnibus. It’s over 1500 pages. It’s selling quick too, might have to get it.

Back in 2007, I bought the 1st 3 (out of 4) hdbk volumes of Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus. They're great, but I'm thinking that's all the Kirby 4th World collections I need. His 4th World stuff, while praised, is not an easy read.

I love Kirby but find most anything he writes/scripts to be painful to read. The Black Panther MMW vol 2 was really tough. I remember reading his 4th World Work way back in the day and simply not being able to continue it.

When Kirby decided to do it all (i.e., write and draw), it appeared to have this "now or never" aspect to it. People can say what they want about the often argued unwarranted credit Stan Lee gets for creating Marvel, but he was a phenomenal storyteller. I'm not implying you're saying otherwise. I'm merely pointing out that you're certainly not the only one who found that Kirby's writing left something to be desired. However, it seemed clear at this stage of his career that he was fed up having to share. One can only imagine the greater impact his work at DC would have had if he had someone help him present his incredible narratives in a more pleasant and easier-to-read fashion.

I like Kirby's writing on New Gods. I think it's easy to forget he wrote the New Gods saga as a means of presenting his humanist and mythological themes to children, for which the Jimmy Olsen and Forever People comics specifically provide a great entry point for young DC superhero readers. As an adult, I still think Mister Miracle is almost flawlessly executed with its suspenseful cliffhangers, outside-the-(Mother)box concept and fun family dynamic between Scott, Barda and Oberon.
