Greatest ensemble cast

Which movies have had the greatest ensemble casts?

Saw Gangs of New York the other night and that cast was pretty good Daniel Day Lewis, Neeson, Diaz, DeCaprio -

Thoughts? What movies have had incredible ensemble casts?

Is it necessary for all of the featured actors to have been big names at the time of release? If not, I'll start with my fave:

The Last Picture Show (1971) - Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Ben Johnson, Ellen Burstyn, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan, Randy Quaid.

Others...

The Professionals (1966) - A '60s testosterone fest, with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, and Jack Palance.

From Here to Eternity (1953) - Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, & Ernest Borgnine.

The Wild Bunch (1969) - William Holden, Warren Oates, Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien, Strother Martin.

I'm noticing a lot of common performers here. Hmmm.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

The Quick & The Dead.

Hackman
Stone
Crowe
DiCaprio

Not a bad cast for a small budget movie, granted DiCaprio & Crowe were not big stars back then.

Next years Dark Knight Rises has a pretty impressive cast too.

My thoughts are that, the bigger and better the ensemble, the worse the movie is. It's like they need to distract you from the fact that the movie sucks.

I was thinking this very thing while watching the trailer for the upcoming Contagion.

I was thinking "hmm, this looks...wait a minute!" Pass!

I mean just look at some semi-recent ones:

Valentine's Day
Grown Ups
All The King's Men
The Ocean's movies
Poseidon
