Statue Base Form and Model Question

So having recently found the lover of collecting statues, I'm logically progressing to the next step...wanting to make them. As such have a few questions.

In starting to sculpt ones self, what is the best to use as a "base" for which to apply the Super Sculpty? I'm assuming wire base, but then what do you fill it with so you don't just need PILES of stuff? I've seen foil, but is there another option to just learn on without doing a mass of sculpt?

Next question is I saw the following on XM Studios forum and I have to admit...I'm pretty interested for both drawing and sculpting purposes. Prior to pulling the trigger (one less Bowen I can buy) is there a better option out there?

You can use wood as the base. I'm not sure about covering the base with Super Sculpey. You could cover it in epoxy and shape it to the way you want it. Make sure your statue (made in Super Sculpey) has a locking point so that you can fix it to the base. Since it is epoxy, you'll have to sand a few portions.
