I'm against whitewashing or diversity for the sake of diversity, but in this case I don't know that the characters are closely tied to their race and like I mentioned it's already been done in its native country.

I agree. The value or importance of ethnicity is not central to the story line. Its a horror movie, with generic characters playing generic roles. The lead could easily be played by a black, Japanese, or latin male and it would all be the same.
Now an argument can be made about simply giving a minority a job, but criticizing the producers for casting a white male because the lead character in a manga/anime, who inconsequently happens to be Japanese, is purely hyperbolic.
