I actually bought those issues (Amazing #144) when they were first published at the newsstand (mid 70s) and it confused the crap out of me. The Harry Osborn Goblin also pissed me off as a youngster. As an adult, I can now say that I felt those story beats belittled my grief. I also felt manipulated. When the clone came back years later, I was never quite able to enjoy the book in the same way. I came back for a little while when JMS was at the helm, and then came One More Day, and that was it.
I don't remember feeling betrayed so much by the Gwen clone (which was only a couple of years after she'd been killed!), as much as I was confused by it. I don't think I got the implications of what it meant at the time.

I think I'm going to start a new thread about when we all felt betrayed by comics, though...I started typing something, but it got too long.

I find that kind of approach works if good writers and editors are involved. JSA, Iron Man 2020, Spider-Man 2099, Earth X, Kingdom Come, and DC Beyond are great examples of what can be done with aging characters and/or their legacies. Likewise, when Wally West and John Stewart took over for their more famous predecessors, it wasn't long before I wholly accepted them as the Flash and Green Lantern; in fact, when Barry and Hal came back, I was extremely annoyed. Granted, some of the originals could stick around to give things a sense of cohesion (the "immortal" types like Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.).

No reboots huh, it would force the writes & editors to really examine their story arcs so as to not screw up anything. Pretty much removes their safety net.
