Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
7/10

That’s a generous 7/10

The Blu-ray dropped today. I have total mixed views about the movie.
It moves at a pace, which is good. The constant Harley narration grates after a while. Towards the end , which features less narration, the film is better for it. I liked the fine line between serious and cartoony the makers achieved. Blame it on the director, but there was something special about Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad, and that special is absent from Birds of Prey. As cartoony as the humour is, it fails to come close to the might of Deadpool. As you are probably aware, the recent Joker movie was deep. Birds of Prey is the complete opposite, and lacks any form of substance. There appears to be a big hole that runs through Birds of Prey. Deliberate or not, the fighting felt not too dissimilar to the 1960’s Batman TV series, but without all the Kapow!

The Hyena was excellent. The CGI for the Hyena is 10/10

Ewan McGregor is ok. Admittedly i have never been a fan of his. The part he plays in BoP i felt would have suited a Leon era Gary Oldman so much better. I guess Gary is too old now, or is he?

I am sure I recall seeing the Joker during an early preview. That moment appears to be missing from the movie. Maybe I blinked and missed it? Admittedly I did fall asleep for about 5 minutes, which is never a good sign.

The theme song that plays a few times throughout the movie kept reminding me of the classic Supertramp track The Logical Song (the sort of music my dad listens to).

So, you randomly go through your viewing menu grid and decide to record a film based on its synopsis. I did that with a film titled, "Ready or Not," which was released in 2019.

The plot description was in that realm of familiarity for me of "having watched similar themes." My hope was not for originality, but rather the execution.

"Ready or Not" gave me what I wanted with a dose of dark, sick humor as the cherry on top.

In a nutshell - groom weds bride at his wealthy family's
mansion. Bride does not know the family is bat-s crazy. She quickly realizes this when a "friendly" game of hide-and-seek on her wedding night turns...bad.

The only thing missing was Billy Idol's "White Wedding" being played over some of the more "interesting" sequences.

Fun movie that kept me entertained for the 90 minutes run time.

8/10

I think if a movie puts you to sleep it can't be rated higher than 5/10

Maybe 6/10 is a better score for BoP

Watchmen (2009) - In 1985 where former superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach into his own sprawling investigation, uncovering something that could completely change the course of history as we know it.

I watched the 3.5-hour ultimate cut which inserts the animated pirate story. The first two thirds of the movie sticks closely to the books and yet it didn't quite work for me. I can understand Alan Moore's criticism that his comics weren't meant to be adapted for the screen. It did look spectacular though. 7/10

Of Human Bondage (1934) - A young man finds himself attracted to a cold and unfeeling waitress who may ultimately destroy them both.

I wanted to see Bette Davis in a pre-code talkie and this satisfied my craving. 6/10
