Actual Coversation Overheard...
I was in a store buying a bottle of water and behind me I overheard a mother talking to her son - and this is what I heard:
Son: "Mom? Can I have this?
Mother: "No - you don't need any candy. It's not good for you anyways. We don't have the extra money for candy. Besides, it will rot your teeth out."
After I paid I stepped aside and the mother walked up to the counter and said "Parliment Lights, please?"

That is pretty common. I used to work at a small grocery shop and this happened quite often. I eventually got used to it but at times I would give them the candy or drink. I didn't do it too often because some parents didn't like that.. It sucked to see that but I tried my best to stay out of people's business.

I think ratchet is referring to the irony of the mom trying to justify to her kid why he shouldn't have the candy by using health and financial related reasons as her example, then buying expensive and extremely toxic cigarettes for herself.
I can only assume she will light up during the car ride home, filling the cabin with second hand smoke on top of it all.
A sad sad addiction.
