Mondo 2012 Year End Awards

We still have another month or so to go but I'm happy with my picks. Anyone can come up with other categories. These are my picks:

Best of the year - Forbidden Planet by Kevin Tong.

This is the best Star Trek poster by Mondo even if it's not really Star Trek. The colors are beautiful and the poster gets the whole retro sci-fi feel. It even does a good job of telling the story.

Honorable Mention - TRON set by Martin Ansin.

Mondo had to create posters for probably my favorite movie by probably their best artist for me to start collecting. The set is awesome but I can't pick which I prefer. I don't like Legacy anywhere near as much as TRON. But it has Quorra. The TRON print has all the elements of the movie but TRON himself could probably be more prominent. But I get the theme with the two posters together.

Biggest Disappointment or Welcome Relief - The Goonies & Star Trek Wrath of Khan (Tie)

When Mondo announced both The Goonies and Wrath of Khan as being released at events. I thought that spelled disaster. But all three posters turned out to be misses. From the Tyler Stout Wrath of Khan that left out characters and elements. To the other version that was too artsy. And The Goonies print which although interesting didn't capture the whole adventure and explore for treasure feel of the movie. I hope Mondo tries again next year on these two.

I love this game! I'll play...

Best of the Year - Toy Story by Tom Whalen

A gorgeous print that not only is masterfully composed, incorporates all the major characters, draws the viewer in and holds them but conveys the emotions and themes of the first act of the first film.

Honorable Mention - Ken Taylor's Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Beatrix Kiddo by Craig Drake

Both of these ones are under the radar but incredibly visually appealing when you spend time looking at the artwork. I have no love for the film BtPotA, and have never seen it in its entirety, but this is one of my favorite posters in my collection.

Biggest disappointment - TDKR license.

Mondo is renown for their creativity but we got two (4) posters of a shadowy Batman. Granted both artists injected their own style and flair but these pieces were not a huge departure from what we have seen DC put out for years or the studios for that matter.

Best artist 2012 - Ken Taylor

Between BtPotA, 20,000 Leagues, Halloween and his Creature ftBL what more can be said.

For some reason Mondo doesn't have any of their gallery shows in that archive.

That's weird. I wonder why?

I just got my Ansin Frankenstein in last week and the colors on it are stunning. I'm going to have a tough time picking a favorite for the year.

Best Of The Year:

Struzan's - The Thing . . . always loved this and I'm thrilled to have it in my collection.

Honorable Mention:

This is my farm - Englert . . . awesome print but couldn't top The Thing for sheer visual impact

Biggest Disappointment:

Mondo's site and ordering process . . . so many wasted hours ending in frustration. They suck.

Best Artist:

GITD seems to be a pointless, tacked on after thought with a lot of prints (bit like 3D in movies) but Englert has turned it into a real art form. His 'Thing' and 'Walking Dead' prints are sensational.
