Quick Tip #7 - Remember, both the DC, Bronze Age House Of Secrets & House Of Mystery have come out in Omnibus form. 2 volumes so far on both.

You can try to find them still as Showcase Presents, but the secondary market prices on all DC Showcase Horror
has freakishly exploded. DC Bronze Horror is red-hot right now.

Marvel tried to compete with DC with their anthology, horror brand. They even carried a few horror titles along from their original Atlas roots. I never thought Marvel's books were that good. Their covers reminded me too much of their amazing Super Hero books, not horror enough. Stories were lukewarm as well.

John Buscema -

John was a wonderful artist & his horror work excellent. He would really soar in horror when drawing ongoing horror characters like Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula & Werewolf by Night. I'll be exploring ongoing horror characters next year.

As I push into the 80's, you have to realize that many of the artists I've mentioned crossed decades. Those who drew in the 50's drew in the 60's. etc... A few of the 70's horror artists not only shown in that decade but made even larger impressions as they crossed over into the following years. Let's start with the big guns. -

Mike Kaluta - I commissioned a piece from Mike back in the 90's & he couldn't have been nicer.

1970's

Getting his comic start for DC & their House of Mystery title, Bernie Wrightson started w/ DC's anthologies, than bounced between DC & Marvel for a few of theirs during the late 60's through the 70's. Then, back to DC to create the Swamp Thing, finally adapting his own projects including his magnificent work of his Frankenstein in the 80's. The best horror illustrator ever? I believe so.

Bernie Wrightson cont.

Wrightson, Corben, Kaluta, through their artwork, rang in a return to the much more horrific themes & violence of the precode horror comics era. These were the guys who grew up reading it.

Along come the 80's & horror comics take a serious backseat to super hero books. Still, a few artists & writers stay true to the genre' & produce some very interesting scare books. Indie comics seem to embrace horror more now that DC or Marvel.

Caliber comics starts off with a brutal zombie book called Dead World. Artist Vince Locke blew this reader away when I 1st saw this cover on the racks.
