I've slowed down a bit in my art collecting in recent years; a combination of rising prices, the difficulty of getting sketch art from artists at the bigger cons and getting a lot of my big wants over the years. There are still a few artists out there who I'd happily spend money on to get art from. David Yardin is one who I've tried to get in the past, but with him being Aussie-based, and busy, it's been difficult to track him down for a sketch or commission. Luckily, the stars aligned and not only was he attending NYCC, but he was also taking pre-commissions. The results are spectacular and worth the wait. His work with markers is amazing and it looks like Felicia is jumping off the page:
Black Cat by David Yardin
Joe Quinones is an artist whose work I've admired for the last few years. I think he's become the second coming of Kevin Maguire the way he is able to render some masterfully expressive facial expressions. So when I saw he too was offering some tonal bust pre-commissions for NYCC, I jumped at the chance. I couldn't decide between my two usual choices, Felicia or Natasha, so at Joe's very reasonable price point, I decided to get both:
Black Widow by Joe Quinones
Black Cat by Joe Quinones
Each piece has great details, from Felicia's little smirk and her holding the Spider-Man mask, to Natasha's sniper scope and wisp of cold breath. Overall, a pretty good convention and I didn't have to wait in any crazy lines.
