Missing 6.5/10

Mildly diverting, but I should have seen The Whale instead.

Lust, Caution (2007) - During World War II era, a young woman, Wang Jiazhi, gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a powerful political figure, Mr. Yee.

I remember liking this more the first time I watched it. Aside from the explicit sex scenes, it's just a capable period melodrama inspired by real events. But those were really good sex scenes. 8/10

Shadow (2018) - In a Chinese royal court, an army commander secretly trains a "shadow" to retake a city against the wishes of the king.

The art direction in this movie is off the charts. The sets and wardrobe are all in rich hues of black and white--which look stunning on the 4K disc. The story is slow at first, but gets good and bloody by the end. 9/10

Sound really interesting. I'm going to look and see if I can find a copy to watch!

Definitely recommended if you like Wuxia. According to the Just Watch website, it's streaming for free with ads on Tubi, but it might not be in HD.

I agree about Shadow. One of the better wuxia in recent years. I watched it back when it was on Netflix. Should be back again sometime, if you can wait.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) - A young Chinese warrior steals a sword from a famed swordsman and then escapes into a world of romantic adventure with a mysterious man in the frontier of the nation.

Speaking of wuxia ... I'm in awe of the fight scenes in this movie. Michelle Yeoh was an exceptional presence on the big screen even two decades earlier. 10/10

Depressing that Crouching Tiger was 23 years ago. Feels like yesterday.

My favorite wuxia continues to be Hero (2002). Cinematography, symbolism and color usage is fantastic. Superb work of art.

Zhang Yimou, who directed Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of the Golden Flower, also did the aforementioned Shadow.
